Pressable is a managed WordPress hosting provider owned by Automattic.
Founded in 2005, Automattic is a web development corporation that is notable for its hosting service provided under the Pressable brand, as well as being a major contributor to the open source WordPress platform.
Valued at a little over $1.16 billion in 2014, the company employs over 800 people and is a major player in the online hosting world. Although the company does not own near as many brands as some of the other big players in the hosting universe, Automattic is a huge company and a force to be reckoned with.
Does this mean that the Pressable managed WordPress hosting service is any good, though?
Just because a company is big and known, it does not mean its end-service is any good. We have seen time and time again that many big-name companies fail to deliver a reliable hosting solution.
In this review, we have explored the Pressable service and presented our findings in a “pros” and “cons” format to help you make an informed purchasing decision.
After all, only you can make the final call and determine whether a hosting service is right for you.
What’s Unique About Pressable?
In addition to providing their managed WordPress hosting services, Pressable focuses heavily on producing and publishing valuable resources for its customers and website visitors. Covering everything from current industry happenings to up-to-date WordPress tips and tricks, their blog is a font of valuable knowledge that any WordPress webmaster should read.
The company also partners up with some of its agency customers to aid their growth and impart specialist knowledge and expertise.
Pressable’s Technical Specifications
All of Pressable’s plans include enterprise-grade architecture. It features:
- Load balancers for distributed traffic;
- Caching for performance improvement and faster load times;
- Secure web servers that include intrusion detection;
- Dedicated database servers where WordPress data is housed; and
- Dedicated file servers (e.g. for plugin files and configs.)
What We Love About Pressable
These are some of the things that we loved about Pressable.
Take a Load Off Your Obligations
The first “pro” is a bit of a generic one that applies to managed WordPress hosting, however, it is something worth mentioning.
Managed WordPress hosting, if you aren’t familiar with it, is sort of like having your very own in-house IT department without having one. With a Pressable plan, the WordPress experts employed by the company will be tasked with the day-to-day technical management of your WordPress website, giving you a lot more time to focus on managing your business.
Imagine not having to focus on the boring stuff such as server optimization, WordPress updates, plugin management, and security checks?
Sounds good, doesn’t it?
This is why managed WordPress hosting is a very popular solution used by millions of webmasters worldwide. If you need more time to focus on your business and want to spend less time messing around with the WordPress backend, managed WordPress hosting is for you.
Automated Backups and Updates
Pressable understands the importance of regular website backups (unfortunately, not many hosting companies do!) and so they offer free automated backups as standard.
Their backup guarantee states that:
“we guarantee daily, 30-day backups of your files and databases, ready to be called upon in case you need them. Feeling a little nervous? You can request a backup on demand and we’ll have it restored for you promptly. We also offer the option to send backups offsite to an existing Amazon S3 Bucket or Rackspace Cloudfiles container, and, in partnership with Jetpack, you can access daily backups of your site with your Jetpack Premium subscription, included on every Pressable site at no additional charge.”
Pressable offers its new customers free website migrations — up to five of them. These migrations can be easily initiated by filling out the Migration Form in the My Pressable control panel. Alternatively, you can request a migration through an email ticket.
While website migrations do carry some risk, Pressable’s team of WordPress experts mitigate the risk of any bad things happening—it’s much safer than you handling the migration yourself—and it frees up more time for you to focus on more important things.
Premium CDN Included With all Plans
Pressable includes a global CDN (content delivery network) with all its plans. The CDN connects your website to a worldwide server network that provides consistent uptime and access speeds anywhere, anytime.
This CDN means that if you are basing your website on a server in the US but have customers and clients all over the world, each visitor will have the same high-quality, fast experience.
With a CDN, Pressable is able to guarantee quick load times and high performance.
Site Staging (Development Area) On All Plans
Staging is important—it is the ability to make major changes to your “live” site and see the results in real-time without having to actually working on your actual site. The changes aren’t visible to the public until you decide the time is right.
On your staging environment, your website is duplicated in real-time and you are able to make changes and see everything working. This means you can add, remove, and modify site elements on your most up-to-date version and only push the results out to your real, live site when they are 100% perfect and ready.
Staging is included in all plans and mitigates the risk of making a change to your website that subsequently causes problems and/or breaks it which, in turn, protects your SEO and doesn’t harm the user experience.
If you work with other people and/or agencies, Pressable’s collaborator account tools will come in very useful for you. With them, you are able to grant access to your website’s backend and other areas to collaborators, include your clients in projects, and work more efficiently without having to give out your main account details.
Collaborator accounts let you share access with your Pressable settings, site files, and Pressable’s customer support team. You retain ultimate control at all times over your collaborator accounts and can grant permissions of your choosing.
Managing users and permissions is a breeze with Pressable. This is one of the most secure ways to collaborate on WordPress projects by far.
Free SSL Certificate
Installing and managing SSL certificates can be difficult.
This is why Pressable uses Let’s Encrypt to ensure that every single site on their platform is secured with an SSL certificate. This involves no configuration, is completely free, and eliminates the worry about having to renew certificates or pay for new ones.
With Pressable, securing websites with SSL is automatic, free, and easy.
Every site needs an SSL certificate to remain competitive these days and it is great that Pressable is willing to provide them for free, even if Let’s Encrypt already issues them for free to begin with.
All new Pressable customers are put in contact with an “onboarding specialist” who personalizes the process. They will help set up your account, provision a new site or migrate your existing one, and help you make the most of your Pressable plan.
Your onboarding specialist is your ongoing consistent point of contact for anything and everything you need.
By providing this service, Pressable goes the extra mile to make sure they provide the very best managed WordPress hosting service possible.
Free Jetpack Plugin Upgrade ($99/year Value)
Jetpack is a WordPress plugin that provides expanded security, malware scanning, and backup options. Best of all, your Pressable plan includes the premium version, a version that holds a $99 per year price tag, for free!
Jetpack Premium also includes the likes of accelerated SEO tools to help enhance your website’s content strategy and position in Google.
There’s a reason this plugin costs $99 per year and that’s because it provides results, results you won’t need to pay for.
In their Service Level Agreement (SLA), Pressable guarantees that they will provide 100% network uptime in a given month, aside from scheduled maintenance, each and every month.
In the unlikely event that Pressable’s network does go down, they will refund 5% of your fees for every 30 minutes of downtime your site experiences up to 100% of your fees.
This is a very good way to get your money back, something we don’t see very often, so this goes to show just how much faith Pressable has in its infrastructure and its reliability.
They don’t just guarantee network uptime, though. Pressable also guarantees that its general infrastructure—e.g. data center HVAC and power—will be 100% functional all of the time in a given month, and that hardware components will be 100% functional at all costs and that older, failing hardware will be replaced.
The only condition to all this is that to request SLA credit, customers must contact Pressable by email at [email protected]
90-Day Money Back Guarantee
You can try Pressable risk-free for 90 days thanks to their 90-day money back guarantee. If you are not imPressed by the Pressable service, you will be given a refund without any questions asked.
Money back guarantees are fairly standard across the hosting industry. Most come in at around 30 days, however.
What We Didn’t Like About Pressable
There were a couple of things that didn’t sit too well with us.
Lack of Customer Support
While Pressable do provide high-quality support (and access to WordPress experts) their front-line support is a little bit limited.
If you want to contact a customer support agent, you have to send in an email ticket. There is no phone line or live chat. For a billion-dollar company, this is a little bit of a shortfall. We expect to see live chat support offered as standard—many other (smaller) hosting companies manage it.
While there is a pop-up chat box on the site, this is only for pre-sales questions and not technical support.
Very High Pricing (Even for Managed WordPress Hosting)
Managed WordPress hosting is always going to be more expensive than your bog-standard shared hosting. After all, you are paying a higher price for better infrastructure and the convenience of not having to directly manage your WordPress site.
With that said, Pressable’s prices are higher than most other managed WordPress hosting companies. As you will see in a minute, their plans will easily run you up three or four figures for an annual plan. Then again, what’s included in the price makes all the plans worth it.
Pressable has three main plans—Starter, Pro, and Agency. Each plan comes with the same technical features. The only difference in these plans is the number of sites you can operate, the number of page views they support, and a few other extra features such as Performance Analysis.
When choosing a plan, decide how many WordPress installs you need and how much site traffic you attract on your website or across your various websites.
With Pressable Starter, you can operate up to 10 WordPress installs and accommodate up to 200,000 unique pageviews per month. This plan does not include Performance Analysis for free (e.g. site metric tracking) however everything else, such as unlimited storage and free migrations, are included.
Pressable Starter will cost you:
- $45.00 per month if you pay month-to-month; or
- $37.50 per month if you subscribe for a year.
With Pressable Pro, you can operate up to 20 WordPress installs and accommodate up to 400,000 unique pageviews per month. This plan includes Performance Analysis for free (e.g. site metric tracking) and everything else, such as unlimited storage and free migrations, are included.
Pressable Pro will cost you:
- $90.00 per month if you pay month-to-month; or
- $75.00 per month if you subscribe for a year.
With Pressable Agency, you can operate up to 50 WordPress installs and accommodate up to 1,000,000 unique pageviews per month. This plan includes Performance Analysis for free (e.g. site metric tracking) and everything else, such as unlimited storage and free migrations, are included.
Pressable Agency will cost you:
- $225.00 per month if you pay month-to-month; or
- $187.50 per month if you subscribe for a year.
If you are operating a site that attracts more than 1,000,000 unique visitors per month or needs more than 50 WordPress installs, Pressable will work with you to provide a bespoke plan with its own pricing model.
Contact their customer support team to learn more.
You can also choose from a list of plans based on pageview estimates by selecting from a dropdown list that goes up to 10 million+ under “High Traffic / Enterprise Plans”.
The highest tier plan costs $3,000.00 per month. After that, you need to contact Pressable for bespoke pricing.
Pressable Final Thoughts
Do we recommend Pressable?
Yes, we do—if they are right for you, go for it. While we personally think that Flywheel does a decent WordPress hosting, Pressable offers more for… more.
It’s all about finding the hosting company that works best for you in terms of pricing, features offered, and level of customer support and WordPress management.
Pressable provides an awesome solution for larger budget websites. If you’re solely after the best possible solutions for your hosting needs, then you don’t have to look far.
