FastComet Review : What We Love About Them
FastComet is a really great host. Is it a shining star, though? Let’s read all the fine qualities of this hosting service.
Worldwide Data Centers
FastComet serves a worldwide customer base that spans across almost 100 countries. This isn’t unusual, plenty of hosting companies have a similar worldwide audience. FastComet, however, goes above and beyond to meet the demands of their audience by providing servers in eleven different locations.
At the time of writing, FastComet’s server locations are:
- Chicago IL, USA
- Dallas TX, USA
- Newark NJ, USA
- Toronto ON, Canada
- London, UK
- Frankfurt, Denmark
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Mumbai, India
- Tokyo, Japan
- Sydney, Australia
These locations support FastComet’s diverse user base. The closer that a website’s visitors are to the server where it is housed, the better the overall performance will be. Better overall performance means happier visitors. And happier visitors are more likely to complete a desired action, such as making a purchase, subscribe to a newsletter, or share your website with their friends.
What’s more, you can choose the location where you want your website to be housed, too. This is ideal if you are starting a website aimed at the US market but are physically based in Europe, et cetera.
FastComet is an Independently-Owned Company with Real People
You may not think that this matters, but it does. It is no coincidence that, more often than not, hosting companies owned by the likes of Endurance International Group (and other parent companies) have major flaws and downfalls.
FastComet is one of only a small handful of hosting companies that have not been bought out by massive corporations. As soon as a hosting company is bought, it loses its sense of identity and, often, much of what once made it great.
Since FastComet is privately owned, there are only a few people working together to provide a personal hosting experience for you. You can even see who these people are on the FastComet website.
Transparency like this gives us a good feeling—you won’t just be giving your money to another money-hungry, faceless corporation who nickel and dime you for as much profit as possible while providing a sub-par, impersonal service.
Strong Uptime Figures
We like to cover uptime early on in our reviews. Why? Because it is one of the most, if not the most, important metrics you can look at when choosing a hosting company.
If you decide to host your website with an unreliable provider with constant downtime, your website is not going to fare very well in the long-term. If Google notices that your website is constantly offline, they will not rank you highly, if at all, in search results pages.
High uptime, above 99.95% but as close to 100% as possible, is hugely important for SEO.
Our rule? If a hosting company cannot provide a service that is online for less than 99.95% of the time (on average), you back out.
So, what about FastComet?
Well, we are happy to report that between April 2019 and April 2020, FastComet had an average monthly uptime of 99.98%. While we like to see a figure of 99.99% (if not 100%!), this is good enough—check!
SSD-Only Cloud Infrastructure
Lots of hosting companies don’t give their shared hosting customers access to SSD storage for their regular plans, often opting to save it for dedicated servers, WordPress shared hosting plans, and VPS hosting.
Not FastComet, though—the only hosting they offer is cloud-based SSD hosting.
SSD gives you up to 300% faster access to your files and databases compared to regular HDDs. This, of course, means that your website will load faster and deliver a better user experience.
Furthermore, the fact that it is based in the cloud means that if anything goes wrong with your server, your website will still be accessible online thanks to Cloudflare CDN—more on this later.
Great Customer Support and Social Media Responses
One of the best things about independently-owned hosting companies is the high level of support they offer. With FastComet, that’s what you get.
When you fire up the website, it won’t be long before you are greeted by a support agent. This is still most likely an automated chat function for new visitors.
I decided to reply and ask a question to see how far this automated function will take the conversion. Surprisingly, as soon as we sent a question, Georgi re-joined the chat a couple of seconds later and helped out.
Although his English was a little off, this is not a major problem.
Customer support is available 24/7. The other support channel is an email-based ticketing system. There is currently no phone line, however, we would take live chat over phone support any day.
Additionally, FastComet has a range of in-depth tutorials covering all the services they support, from WordPress to Magento.
45-Day Money Back Guarantee
FastComet’s 45-day money back guarantee is 50% longer than the typical 30-day one that most other hosting companies offer.
If you are dissatisfied with the FastComet service (unlikely!) then you can ask for and get a refund within the first 45 days. There are some exceptions to this, though. The following deductions will be made from all refunds:
- Domain name registration fees;
- Setup fees (more on this later); and
These are pretty standard terms, though. They prevent dishonest individuals from abusing the service by signing up for web hosting, canceling, getting a refund, and pocketing a free domain name.
If you transfer your own domain name and end up getting a refund, there will, of course, be no domain deductions taken.
Free Daily Backups and Cloudflare CDN
Unlike other hosting companies, FastComet provides daily and weekly backups for free. What’s more, these free backups are completely reliable.
We have seen other hosting companies offer free backups before, only for them to be extremely unreliable because they often don’t even take place.
All backups are stored for 30 days and can be restored at the click of a mouse.
Also, Cloudflare CDN setup is included for free with all shared hosting plans. Cloudflare lets you distribute your website’s content all around the world so that it is closer to your visitors.
Free Lifetime Domain and Site Migration
If you sign up for your domain name through FastComet, you will get it free… for life.
This is another area where FastComet outdoes the competition—most other hosting companies will give you a free domain for your first year only and then charge you a massive premium for each subsequent year.
Of course, you will need to pay for the domain name if you ever leave FastComet. We don’t think this happens very often, though, judging by the service quality.
Also, if you are moving from another host to FastComet, they will move your website for free. FastComet has a team of in-house web experts who will handle the process for you, entirely on your behalf.
No half-baked tools. No involvement on your part. No drama.
Optimized WordPress Plans Available
If you want to start your website with WordPress, FastComet has you covered on that front as well.
All their plans are optimized for WordPress usage. This includes all the important features such as a one-click installation wizard and under-the-hood server optimizations that help run WordPress software at its most optimum.
We will discuss FastComet’s plans in more depth later.
Plans Renew at the Same Price
Many people have been stung by this hosting industry trick; it is one of the oldest in the playbook.
You sign up to a hosting company’s plan at an ultra-low, almost unbelievable price. It’s $2 per month. It’s the perfect plan. It has everything you could ever want and need. You sign up for 12 months and fork over $24 to cover the year.
“Great!”, you think. This plan is great value and will cover your needs for years to come.
12 months pass quickly and it’s time to renew your plan. You get an email one day. It’s an invoice from the hosting company. You open it up expecting to see the same low price… instead, you see a bill for $155.40 plus taxes.
Somebody didn’t read the small print when they signed up! That low $2 is only good for the first year. After that, you either pay the full, undiscounted price or go elsewhere.
Not with FastComet, though.
The initial price you pay, no matter if it was heavily discounted, is the price you pay for life. The only exception to this is if you decide to upgrade to a different plan further down the road.
FastComet Hosting Pricing
Finally, we come on to pricing. As we mentioned earlier, prices remain the same even at renewal, so there are no nasty tricks or surprises waiting. To add to this, their pricing structure is very, very simple.
Although FastComet has lots of different hosting categories—Web Hosting, WordPress Hosting, Joomla Hosting, etc—they are all the same in both substance and price.
The only reason FastComet segregates their website like this is to talk about each individual element in more detail and what steps they have taken to optimize their three shared hosting plans for certain use cases.
So, with that, let’s take a look at each plan’s pricing in more detail.
|FastCloud||FastCloud Plus||FastCloud Extra|
|Bandwidth||up to 25,000 visits||up to 50,000 visits||up to 100,000 visits|
|Customer Support||24/7 live chat, email, phone||24/7 live chat, email, phone||24/7 live chat, email, phone|
|Money-back guarantee||45 days||45 days||45 days|
The FastCloud plan is just that, a basic hosting plan ideal if you are just starting out. With it, you can host a single website and have 15GBs of SSD storage. That is more than enough to start out a website and begin scaling it up.
The regular monthly price is $9.95, however, you can get it all the way down to $2.95.
FastCloud Plus is aimed at webmasters who already have a website and need additional resources with room to grow. On the FastCloud Plus plan, you can host multiple websites—you only get one domain for free, however—and you have 25 GB in SSD storage to play with.
You also get 3 free website transfers and twice the amount of CPU Power and 1GB extra RAM to manage the extra workload.
The regular monthly price is $14.95, however, you can get it all the way down to $5.95.
Again, this is a fantastic value for money.
Finally, we have the FastCloud Extra plan. This is ideal for medium-sized websites that need additional resources to cope with demand. With this plan, you get a massive 35 GB in SSD storage, 30 automated daily backups, and three times the amount of CPU and RAM as the FastCloud plan.
The regular monthly price is $19.95, however, you can get it all the way down to $9.95.
All these plans stack, too. On the Extra plan, you get everything that both the Plus and Basic plans have.
Things FastComet Can Improve On
Allow Shared Hosting Customers to Purchase Dedicated IPs
FastComet only offers dedicated IP addresses to customers who have purchased a VPS plan. If you were hoping to get a shared hosting dedicated IP, you are out of luck.
This is frustrating because there are plenty of hosting companies that let you pay extra for a dedicated IP. This leaves you with no choice but to upgrade to a (much more expensive) VPS plan if you want one.
After having an consistent uptime of ~ 99.98, one would expect really great speed from FastComet.
Well they proved us wrong.
According to our uptime monitor, we’ve received a sluggish average of 800ms speed from FastComet servers which honestly isn’t on par with many of its competitors.
FastComet Review: Final Thoughts
FastComet is a worthy competitor.
We have no trouble recommending them to anybody who is looking for a transparent, secure, and reliable hosting provider to help take their website to the next level. Whether you want to build a small website or scale up an existing one to millions of visitors per month, FastComet can handle it, and then some.
Here’s a recap of some of the things we liked:
The best way to decide for yourself, however, is to test FastComet out. With their 45-day money back guarantee, you have nothing to lose.
